Our History

Dr John Rigg MB, CM, established the practice in 1900 after returning from missionary work in China. Starting at 6 Walton’s Parade, he later moved to 12 and then 91 Fishergate Hill, where his son, R. Philip A. Rigg, joined him in 1926 and took over by 1932. Philip made a significant mark as the first doctor at Preston Royal Infirmary to specialize in ECGs. In the 1940s, Dr S.O. Hunt, who married Philip’s daughter, joined the practice.

By 1970, Dr Terry Withers succeeded Philip, and the practice moved to the basement of 88 Fishergate Hill. Dr Vic Calland became the third partner in 1980, and when Dr Tim Hunt retired in 1981, Dr Hardev Singh took his place. In 1988, the practice relocated to purpose-built premises at 50 Fishergate Hill. Sadly, Dr Withers passed away in 1989 and was succeeded by Dr Alison Payne.

Throughout its history, the practice has been home to several dedicated doctors, including Dr Lowe and Dr Johnson. Despite the many changes in medical practice, we remain committed to upholding the high standards established by Dr John Rigg over a century ago when he established the practice.
